Pan-Asian – the name conjures up images of far off islands and exotic landscapes. The lush, richly endowed islands of the East Indies straddle the equator between Australia and the Asian mainland, stretching more than 3,000 miles and encompassing over 17,000 islands.

It was these islands that early navigators set out in their Junks, the traditional Chinese sailing vessel, to explore. Junks were efficient and sturdy ships that were travelling the oceans as early as the 2nd century A.D. Trade was competitive as Junks sailed the Java Sea, the Mediterranean of the Orient, and the Spice Islands. Art and music flourished while elaborate rituals of food and drink were raised to a refined level.
